Learning Outcome 4
Throughout the whole peer review process, I have become more confident now in providing good, constructive feedback for my peers. For the third project, I was in a group and reviewed both Franco Leehives’ and Peyton Perkins’ papers. One of the most impactful examples of my development as a peer reviewer came with Franco Leehive’s paper. At first, I was quite hesitant with giving feedback to one of my peers. However, after I received helpful feedback on my own work, it made me realize that with the right constructive criticism, it can help a paper a lot, since it is essential for improvement, and won’t harm the other person. My shift in the peer review aspect has changed for the better, which I believe has allowed me to be able to offer much more meaningful feedback than before. For example, I realized that in Franco’s paper certain words were being used repetitively, which in turn made the writing sound redundant. I then suggested other words to use to be able to improve the flow and variety of language. I also pointed out areas where he needed to fix it to match MLA format, like adjusting the in-text citations and ensured that the works cited paper was formatted properly. With offerings these suggestions, I knew it would help strengthen his paper. This experience reflects my growth with achieving the learning outcome of giving out good and helpful peer revisions to my fellow classmates. I understand now that feedback needs to be specific enough and supportive of my peer to help improve the writers’ capabilities. I plan to continue to change my balance of crouton with positive comments and reinforcement while making sure they’re not only helpful but motivating.
